I was speaking to someone about Cuban Artist Julio Larraz the other day who described him as a Titan in the art world. I echo that sentiment. Larraz has been called one of most important contemporary Latin American artists of our time. I’d go so far to say he is the most important.
On Thursday, October 15, Larraz, opened a solo show at Ameringer | McEnery | Yohe Gallery in Chelsea, New York. There the media and the public will see the works of a master. We have articles coming out in Newsweek and the Huffington Post. Other media will be covering the exhibit which will be Larraz’s inaugural show with the gallery since joining in 2014 and after being represented for 15 years by the Marlborough Gallery in New York. The show will consist of 15 paintings and will run until November 14.

Larraz has had an amazing journey, both personally and artistically. In 1961, Julio Larraz, along with his family, escaped their homeland of Cuba and headed for the United States. New York City became Julio’s new home and the place where he would start his artistic career. Early on in his career, Larraz painted political caricatures that were published by publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Esquire, Vogue and Rolling Stone. In 1967, he shifted focus, concentrating solely on painting. Larraz is best known by his precise and detailed techniques, his imagination and his subtle touch
Julio Larraz paints deeply layered satires of art and life. He is a visual philosopher interchanging reality and imagination. Without being hyper-realistic, fragments of scenes are revealed with abundant descriptions.
The inaugural show at Ameringer | McEnery | Yohe will showcase Larraz’s skills of handling light and shadow and enigmatic narratives embedded in his paintings.
