Maayan Sophia Weisstub Exhibits Evocative Installation The Bed at the Museum of the Home,
Raising Awareness about Domestic Abuse

London, UK – Interdisciplinary artist Maayan Sophia Weisstub exhibits a new installation, The Bed, to raise awareness against domestic abuse, as part of the Festival of Sleep at the Museum of the Home in London, July 5, 2022 – September, 2022.

The Bed is a thought-provoking installation that replaces the archetypal image of the bed with a mattress and pillows recalling bruised and battered skin. These signs of abuse and trauma interposed onto what is typically a symbol of home, security, and privacy, are meant to incite uncomfortable but necessary conversations about domestic abuse as well as encouraging treatment and healing for survivors.

“I want The Bed to be uncomfortable, to influence greater commitment to stopping acts of domestic abuse, and to encourage treatment and healing for survivors.” – Maayan Sophia Weisstub

Weisstub will be conducting a creative workshop with designer and educator Nirit Binyamini and educational psychologist Bat-Hen Shahar about sharing personal traumas through craft and collaborative making. The workshop will have participants sew a bed cover together and “scar” the communal blanket with stitches and personal stories. The concept of the workshops draws from historical traditions of diverse cultures where quilts and patchwork are used for commemoration, sharing burdens, supporting one another, and healing traumas. The workshop is suitable for a group of 15 participants and will be about 2 hours long.

Weisstub will also be working with Refuge, a charity that helps survivors of domestic abuse in the United Kingdom. Louise Rafferty from Refuge will host a short presentation and Q&A.
