We recently offered a PR for Artists seminar at the Brewery Art Colony and were amazed by the range, breath and variety of art and artists which the campus offered. The Brewery is a unique creative ecosystem where painters, sculptors, writers, musicians and mixed media artists live work, and create. It is a small city unto itself complete with its own restaurant and an unexpected gym complete with rock climbing walls.

So, first the facts about the Brewery Art Colony:

The Brewery Art Colony, located in Los Angeles, is known as the largest live-and-work artists’ colony in the world. The campus sits on the old Edison Los Angeles #3 Power Plant which was designed by John Parkinson – the architect responsible for many of LA’s most iconic structures including City Hall and Union Station, and includes work studios, living lofts, restaurants, a gym and galleries. The Brewery is home to practitioners of a variety of artistic mediums from painting, sculpture and photography to industrial design, architecture and experimental new media. For 82 years it was a functional brewery, first the Eastside Brewery in 1897 and later the Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery which closed in 1979. Carlson Industries purchased the property in 1980 and spent the next three years repurposing it into artist living/work spaces to take advantage of the city’s new artist-in-residence code. The Edison Power Plant is a separate structure built in 1903 and later acquired by Carlson Industries. It consists of 23 acres and 14 buildings.

The art colony is perhaps best known for its world famous Brewery Artwalk, which attracts thousands of visitors twice a year. The upcoming Artwalk will be held on the weekend of October 3rd and 4th, 2015 from 11am – 6pm. The Brewery Artwalk is a twice-annual event offering a unique, multifaceted look into the myriad artists living and working at this unique campus. It offers a rare glimpse not only for the general public but for collectors, gallerists, curators to see the wide range of art that Los Angeles has to offer. The event, which is now an L.A tradition, is a community service open and free to all.

Although it needs to be seen to be truly experienced, this is a brief thumbnail sketch of the Brewery and its history. Our PR for Artists seminar at the Brewery was attended by a range of artists, from those beginning in their field, trying to figure out how to make a living as an artist and build their brand, to established, successful artists looking to take their work to the next level.

The seminar, developed by PR for ARTISTS, and was presented by Anthony Mora, President of Mora Communications Inc., and the company’s Vice President, Aubrie Wienholt. It is designed to address the basic nuts-and-bolts PR questions and to offer a blueprint for an effective marketing campaign. We focus on taking artists through a step-by-step process, reviewing how to utilize proven PR tools that can lead to both artistic fulfillment and financial success.

The seminars address a wide range of topics including why PR and marketing are essential for establishing a successful career in the arts, why effective PR is effective storytelling,, Avoiding the “I can’t promote my own art” career trap, developing media-savvy dynamic pitches that work and melding your media relations campaign with your social media campaign.

Although our seminars have been offered from coast to coast, the Brewery experience was unique. Being in an expansive one-of-a-kind campus run by artists for artists, the creative energy is palpable. At each turn, one encounters a different form and style of artistic expression. It was as rewarding for us as it hopefully was for the artists who attended.

We look forward to returning. This is one case, where once is not enough.
