actAs I’ve written in other articles, too many artists create their art and wait, or submit to galleries and wait, or send out emails and wait, or… you get the picture.

Waiting is not a business strategy.

Sure, there will be plenty of instances when you’re waiting for responses, that’s a part of the artist’s life, but while you’re waiting to hear back from one query submission or presentation, use your energy, strategy and creativity to keep moving forward.

When you’re not creating art, use time to create your marketing campaign.

Marketing is an art

You’re an artist

It can be a great fit, if you approach it the right way.

Make a list of actions you can take, resources you can use, people you can contact, marketing experts you can work with, and approaches you can use.

If you’re not on social media platforms now, pick two and start getting comfortable with them Instagram can be a great platform for visual artists.

Create a blog. It’s a way for the public to get to know both you and your art work. But remember, you don’t simply want to post images. You want to engage. If this isn’t your strength, find a writer who can help. Be whatever works for you, but be authentic. Show your process, showcase some behind the scenes images. Shoot some short videos that give people a glimpse into you and your art.

Launch a PR campaign. Being featured in the mainstream press offers you exposure, validation and credibility. You can then magnify your coverage through your blog and social media platforms.

Find different ways to showcase and sell your art. Don’t look at galleries as being your only options, look at fairs, art walks and nontraditional venues. Try displaying and selling your work online. Some options to consider include:

Art pal

Art Fire

Fine Art America

So, no more waiting – act.

Be bold.
